The Hidden Gold Coast Spots That Locals Can't Get Enough Of

We know where we’re headed this weekend.

Nothing quite screams summer like days in the sunshine with your best friends, feeling the sand on your skin and consuming far too much gelato to try and cool down from the heat. Lucky for us, all of those things can be found from taking a quick dip down south, and now we’ve got the lowdown on all the Gold Coast spots that locals love! Don’t get us wrong, we adore the Burleigh Pav – but sometimes a crowd-free location is the real cure to Sunday-afternoon sadness…

This is our pick of the hidden spots Gold Coast locals love.

Greenhouse: The Bathhouse

Looking to wind down after a long working week? The Bathhouse has you sorted. Owned by the same team behind Greenhouse Canteen in Miami and South Brisbane, The Bathhouse is the perfect one-stop-shop for revitalisation: a communal unisex bathhouse located at the mouth of Tallebudgera Valley.

A day at The Bathhouse includes full-use of their many facilities; being two heated hydrotherapy spas, custom built wet steam room infused with essential oils, a red cedar sauna, a magnesium plunge pool, and a sun deck and lounge area for you to enjoy. With six different packages to choose from, ranging from an hour-long use of the aforementioned facilities to a pampering face-mask experience, or a three-hour soak session that includes a massage, plant-based lunch, and bubbles or kombucha, you’ll be forgetting about your Monday-itis in no time!

Casuarina Beach

As far as GC beaches go, Casuarina is one of the most under-appreciated. The wide open white sands are perfect for sunbathing, while the rolling waves are a favourite among surfers. With less foot traffic than some of it's northern counterparts, Casuarina is perfect for those looking for somewhere quiet to relax. Even better, if you drop by during migration season you may even see whales passing!

Currumbin Beach & Creek

If you’re wanting waves without the crowds this weekend, then Currumbin beach is certainly the place to head to. Fondly known as ‘The Alley’, the waves are adored daily by the local surfers, and you won’t spend hours looking for a park like you do at Burleigh. With shops and cafes along the beachfront, plus the beautiful view from the surf club, you’ll find yourself easily spending the whole day at the awarded cleanest beach in Queensland.

If calm water is more your style, then you don’t have to head far – nestled just around the corner is Currumbin Creek. Hire a paddleboard, boat, or some bikes to enjoy on the creek and the adjoining pathway, and soak up the whole day next to one of the free-to-use public barbecues!

Balter Brewery

It’s the rule of 2019: you can’t hit up a new suburb without enjoying the local brew. So, after your day at Currumbin Beach, make sure you head on back into the residential streets where you can find Balter Brewery carefully tucked away at 14 Traders Way, Currumbin.

Open Wednesday through to Sunday, Balter Brewery want you to feel a sense of enjoyment from doing something you love – and we all know how much we love a cold drink on a summers afternoon. With rotating food-trucks providing a bite to eat, along with live music every Friday night, it’s the prime pit-stop for your Gold Coast getaway.

Cougal Cascades

The Currumbin Rockpools are a hidden gem that has climbed the ranks in the past few years – and, with limited parking, are becoming a tough place to enjoy without showing up at the break of dawn. What many people don’t know about is that a further drive out along Currumbin Creek Road to its end will bring you to the carpark and subsequent entrance of the track for Mount Cougal, Springbrook National Park.

The sealed walking track is an easy 1.6km return path, and follows the creek alongside a series of rock pools, small waterfalls and of course, the Cougal Cascades. Immerse yourself in the lush sub-tropical rainforest, settle in on the platforms provided for viewing the cascades, or enjoy a dip in the ever-so-fresh water.

Goji Granola

Actual quote from Styler Gracie Clough, "They do the BEST vegan coco fluff!" Their cocout-based soft serve is a coconut-water-based soft serve that is vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free. Their head chef is inspired by the soft-serve ice-cream that hi grandad used to make in his shop back in Italy. Offering an always changing assortment of flavours, Goji Granola offers coastal folks the chance to indulge in delicious, guilt-free ice-cream, granola and more. Seriously, they are delicious. If there is an event or holiday coming up, they'll even create a special flavour to celebrate!

Oh, and don't leave Buster at home. They love dogs and even offer a range of dog-friendly ice-creams!

Scoop Gelati

Spent the afternoon on the famed Burleigh Hill? We can’t blame you – it’s a popular spot for a reason, being the perfect Sunday sesh location with the views of the Gold Coast splayed out over the ocean. What you may not know is that only a short walk away from the crowded hill is the best gelato shop in Southern Queensland – Scoop Gelati.

With generous portion sizes for only $5 a pop, you can’t enjoy a day at Burleigh without indulging in Scoop’s specialities. Perfect for an afternoon treat to tide you over before dinner, a midday snack to cool-you down, or to fulfil that sweet-tooth craving after a few drinks, there is never, ever a bad time for a toasted macadamia and Himalayan rock salt combo – we’re drooling at the thought.

The Borrowed Nursery

Tucked away in Mermaid Beach, The Borrowed Nursery is a lush, dreamy escape from the real world. With a truly spectacular array of plants and greenery, they are the experts for everything plant design, plant hire, and venue hire.

Combining creativity with a background in interior design, they have carefully curated a hire collection of pieces to suit a variety of events. Alternatively, feed your plant obsession and pick up a few new pieces for your space!

D’Bah Hill

If Burleigh Hill is truly getting too busy for you, and having to park in a different suburb really isn’t your ideal way to spend your time, then don’t fret – there’s a lesser known hill that’s still perfect for the summer evening hangout. Duranbah Hill (or D’bah, to those in-the-know) sits right on the border of Queensland and New South Wales at Point Danger.

With a panoramic view of the ocean which never disappoints, (especially during the migration of the whales!), D’bah is the perfect hill to chill out and relax on when you need a bit more peace and quiet. Plus, if you’re feeling peckish, Café D’bah sits atop the hill and is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week!

Hotel Komune

Feeling in need of a boogy but don’t want to step foot in Surfers Paradise? We’ve got you. Head on down to Coolangatta and pop into Hotel Komune: the much-adored backpacker hotel that simultaneously plays host to a pool-side beach-club alongside the quieter scene of the Southern GC.

If it’s Sunday afternoon and you’re one of the first hundred people through the door, you’ll score five free drinks to enjoy that night. But if a Sunday Sesh isn’t on your agenda, you won’t miss out: the club is open all weekend long for you to grab a drink, a dip, or a dance on the d-floor.
