Blockbusters on a budget.

Taking a date to the latest blockbuster movie? Prepare to not have much change from a $100. Do the maths: two tickets $40, two popcorn combos $30; parking when there’s no validation: $15. But don’t choke on that popcorn kernel just yet. We’ve put together the ultimate cheapskates’ guide to the silver screen to save your cash for what’s most important… Like an extra choc-top.

Here are seven ways to get cheap or discount movie tickets:

1 Look for the cheaper cinemas

See all your fave flicks on the big screen (and we mean IMAX BIG) for a bargain at Cineplex cinemas in Southbank, Hawthorne, Balmoral, Victoria Point and Nerang. Student/senior prices sit at $6.50 weekends and evenings, adults at $8.50; weekdays at $5.50 for student/senior and $6.50 for adults. What a bargain! If you still need convincing (pfft, as if you aren’t already on board) 3D movies can be seen for $9-$11 and you get $1 off if you bring your own 3D glasses. BONUS!

2 Cheap Tuesday (or Monday)

A list of cinemas across Brisbane have special deals for cheap movie tickets on Tuesday night. Cineplex has $5.50 tickets all day and night, United Cinemas Eldorado also go for $5.50 ($3 extra for 3D), Palace Cinemas have Monday Discount Day with tickets going for $7 all day. Even the big comfy seats at Event Cinemas are cheaper on Tuesdays at $13.50 instead of the regular $18.50, and if you check out with VISA you get a free small popcorn. Score!

3 Check with your phone/insurance companies

Google “discount movie tickets” and you’re likely to get offers from Optus, Telstra and even RACQ. Many phone companies and insurance companies offer their members special cheap movie tickets as part of a deal. Optus clocks in at the cheapest, offering $10 tickets, while Telstra has seats on offer for $11.  RACQ ups the ante by not only offering $11 movies, but throws in some super saving candy bar vouchers. BUT make sure you check the terms and conditions; almost all require you to print the vouchers before attending and are available at only selected cinemas.

4 Join movie clubs

Most cinemas have member clubs and special deals. Paddington’s Blue Room Cinebar’s Bronze loyalty program is free to join and earn reward points, or upgrade to silver or bronze status for cheap movie tickets. Event Cinemas’ Cine Buzz Club gives you one free movie after every sixth seen, and frequently has members’ only offers for selected movies. Because they really want to say thank you for spending half your life at the movies. But by far our favourite is Palace Cinema's Movie Club, which comes with discount tickets, birthday gifts, and lots more, plus you get to sit in a swanky cinema with a well-stocked bar.

5 Pre-purchase your snacks

This next tip is just between us, and the editors here.  And the whole internet. You don’t HAVE to buy cinema snacks… I know right, revelation! Head to the supermarket before kick-off time to get your fave snacks. Or make your own popcorn at home. Or just don’t eat snacks. OK we know that last one is just going too far.

6 Coax friends and family into buying you gift cards

It’s Saturday night, you have nowhere to go (code for you to make up an excuse to not attend something), you think to yourself “Oh, a movie would be nice, but I’m broke.” But THEN you remember Aunt Sarah dropped $50 on a gift card last Chrissy (they usually last 12 months, thank God). You go to the movies, sneakily pretend you’re waiting for a friend in the foyer and then go enjoy a blockbuster classic thanks to Aunt Sarah. Problem solved!

7 Meal deals

Movie ticket meal deals are a great way to feed your belly before feeding your mind. The Libertine at the Barracks has a deal on Monday nights where you can enjoy a five-course meal for just $35pp, and receive a movie ticket to use at the Palace Barracks Cinemas for free (the ticket is valid for 2-3 months so you don't have to use it the same night you dine). Beach House Bar and Grill also has movie meal deals starting from $19.90 at certain locations.
