The Waterloo Hotel is undoubtedly a Brisbane landmark and iconic watering hole. Nestled on the corner of Ann Street and Commercial Road in Newstead, it has become a fixture of the local landscape.
Recent renovations to The Waterloo Hotel have seen the former majesty of the building restored and complemented by a luxurious and eclectic interior, incorporating classic and contemporary furniture with modern lighting to create a rich tapestry of materials, colours and textures.
After a busy morning shopping in nearby Homemaker The Valley, we decide to break for a bite to eat and recharge.
My guest and I arrive in the midst of the busy lunchtime rush and are greeted by the friendly wait staff. After ordering cocktails from the sprawling cocktail lounge, we find a cosy booth to be seated.
Our dining experience starts with a plate of salt and pepper squid. Spicy and zesty, with the perfect amount of crunch, it goes down a treat with a refreshing Aperol Spritz.
Next came seared scallops, plated with spicy chorizo, creamy guacamole and pico de gallo. While an unusual combination, the melt-in-your-mouth scallops were a true highlight of the meal.
The main courses followed, and we decided to choose a couple of dishes easy for sharing. The Turkish lahmacun pizza arrives first and is quickly devoured. The tender spiced lamb with delicious toppings of peppers, onion, parsley and creamy yoghurt sauce is mouthwatering in its own right. Served atop a perfectly cooked base that is not too doughy, we both enjoy the saltiness of the slices.
Finally, comes the crispy pale ale-battered Australian kingfish. The fish is clearly fresh and deliciously accompanied with crunchy chips and a light garden salad. The accompanying tartare sauce is a nice surprise, with hints of pickle.
From seamless service to an impressive menu, The Waterloo Hotel makes the perfect spot for lunch or dinner, just a stone’s throw from the CBD. If you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, good music, friendly staff and fresh, hearty meals, consider this Brisbane favourite.
