Red lips have been a beauty go-to for women practically since the dawn of time. From the Suffragettes to Coco Chanel, women have been slicking on red lipstick for centuries. When applied correctly, it can convey everything from power to confidence and sex appeal.

There’s a reason Taylor Swift sings about her crimson pout all the time - red lipstick is a major runway trend starring alongside some big Autumn/Winter fashion week trends this season.

And despite what you’ve previously thought about not being able to pull it off, we’re here to change your mind. Here’s your cheat sheet to wearing red lipstick; five ways this season.

CAT EYES (above)

Tay-Tay is the modern day queen of the red lip, and she knows how to work her angles. Try liquid eyeliner to create the perfect cat-eye (tip: start from the flick and fill in the rest of the lid to achieve a symmetrical look), and if you’re feeling daring, try fake eyelashes for added drama. A lightweight foundation is key to this beauty look.

BARE FACED

Models everywhere were sporting the ‘less is more’ look this season with fresh faces and minimal makeup. Keeping skin bare (or with a light foundation or BB cream) and your eyes makeup-free, a slick of a bright matte lip will offer a balanced beauty look that is great for day as well as night.

VAMPY

To achieve the ultimate femme fatale beauty look, opt for a dark, wine hued tone (which works particularly well for ivory-hued complexions). For those new to the look, start off with a light slick of mascara and some light contouring with a bronzer. For those after a more striking look, add a smokey eye with a kohl liner and a dark shadow. Dewy skin and a great lip liner are key to this loo

GLOSSY

There’s nothing more eye-catching than a luscious glossy lip, and this look is something that never goes out of style. Keep makeup to a minimum to let your lips do the talking. Make sure you match the glossy lip with a big eyebrow to keep the look modern and natural.

BRIGHT AND BOLD

If you really want to stand out, wear a dramatic red lip that has a high-voltage tone to it. For lighter skin tones, opt for reds that give off hints of pink and magenta, while those with more tanned skin can go for corals and orange reds. But the biggest rule to follow is - break the rules! Finding your perfect red is all about experimenting with different colours and looks - and accessorising it with a rockin' attitude.
