5 Highlighters for a Natural Glow

5 Highlighters for a Natural Glow

Emphasis on the natural.

By Ruth De Luchi | 4th August 2016

Step aside, strobing! Who wants delicate luminosity, all-day radiance and glowing skin without looking like a disco ball/sparkly vampire/sweaty mess? All hands should be up, FYI.

There are countless highlighters and illuminators on the market today, and let’s get real, most of them aren’t cheap. There’s nothing quite as torturous as spending $60+ on an excessively glittery/shimmery product and being stuck with it for the rest of your life. (Seriously, illuminators take FOREVER to use up.)

Luckily, I’ve done the legwork for you. I’ve tried many – too many – highlighters over the years and I can safely say that these five products are amazing They’re all different in their own way, but will give you that oh-so gorgeous soft focus and celestial glow.

Before we start, if you haven’t used a highlighter/illuminator before, there are a couple of things you need to do:

1. Pick the perfect shade for your skin tone.

If you have a fair skin tone, opt for pearl or pink shades. For medium skin tones, beige shades work best. Darker skin tones suit bronze or gold shades.

2. Know where to put the product!

Use a small to medium sized brush to apply the product to the top of cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow, inner corner of the eyes and above and below your brows (see image below). Confused? Then just stick to cheekbones and you’ll be golden. (Literally.)

1. Too Faced Candlelight Glow

Adorable packaging is one thing but this product is absolute perfection. It’s smooth, silky and refracts light like no other. The duo highlighter will give you a lit-from-within complexion. What more could you want? Use the duo tones separately or mix them together with your brush for added dimension. This product comes in two colour options: Warm Glow (beige/creamy undertone) and Rosy Glow (silver/white undertone).

2. Red Earth Secret Potion Illuminating Skin Fluid

There’s nothing better than a beauty product that looks amazing AND contains beneficial ingredients for your skin. Red Earth’s illuminator is one of a kind. This multi-purpose product enlivens skin while soothing and conditioning with vitamins A and E. Personally, I love to apply this product straight over foundation using my fingertips, and then use the remainder across my décolletage. It comes in three shades, and is also available in a powdered form.

3. M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish

A common one, yes, but if you’ve tried this product you’d know why. The M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish range has been around forever, but the brand always brings out fresh and exciting limited-edition shades. This illuminator is a luxurious, velvety-soft powder with a radiant finish, which makes it a total must-have. Some of my personal favourite shades include Lightscapade, Perfect Topping, and Soft and Gentle.

4. Benefit Watt’s Up

This was one of the first illuminators I ever purchased, and there’s a very good reason that I continue to use it: it is creamy, blendable goodness! This delicate champagne-toned product comes in a wind-up tube with the product on one end and a blending sponge on the other. It’s a cream to powder illuminator, which is perfect for anyone with dry skin or those who avoid powdered products.

5. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

If you haven’t already heard of Champagne Pop, the Jaclyn Hill x Becca Cosmetics creation, it’s basically a new pressed colour in the renowned Skin Perfector range. It. Is. Faultless! The range contains both pressed powders and fluids, containing multi-toned pearls to adjust to your natural undertones. There are five original colours to choose from, Champagne Pop being the newest edition and suited to a LOT of skin tones. This product has a high-shine finish; however, its creamy texture enables it to be applied lightly for a natural finish or layered for a more intense glow.
